What is Tinder Fungus?

The tinder fungus (Fomes fomentarius), also known as the true tinder fungus or amadou mushroom, is a perennial tree fungus with distinctive hoof- to bracket-shaped fruiting bodies.

It is particularly well-known for its long history of human use: parts of the mushroom were once used to produce so-called tinder – a highly flammable material for starting and transporting fire.
