Ethanol-treated Cordyceps militaris, 1.5 g per day

Duration

4 weeks

What was investigated?

NK cell activity, lymphocyte proliferation, and selected cytokines in healthy men.

What was observed?

Stronger changes in several laboratory parameters were measured in the Cordyceps group compared to the placebo group. No statistically significant adverse reactions were reported in the study.

Cs-4, 333 mg three times daily

Duration

12 weeks

What was investigated?

Parameters of a graded bicycle ergometer test in healthy individuals aged 50 to 75.

What was observed?

Metabolic and ventilatory thresholds changed in the Cs-4 group; no changes in VO₂max were detected in either group. The sample size of 20 was small.

Lentinula edodes · Shiitake

Daily consumption of dried Shiitake in healthy adults

Dai et al. · Journal of the American College of Nutrition · 2015

Human study Randomized Nutritional intervention n = 52
Investigated

5 or 10 g of dried Shiitake per day

Duration

4 weeks

What was investigated?

Several immune cell and inflammatory parameters, as well as salivary IgA in healthy adults aged 21 to 41.

What was observed?

After four weeks, changes in various immune cell and laboratory parameters compared to baseline were described. Whole dried Shiitake were studied, not a HAWLIK extract.

Grifola frondosa · Maitake

Cognitive tests in healthy older adults

Jogi et al. · Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology · 2026

Human study Randomized Double-blind Placebo-controlled n = 47
Investigated

Two defined Maitake strains in bread

Duration

18 weeks

What was investigated?

Cognitive test scores and NK cell activity in healthy Japanese adults aged 60 and older.

What was observed?

For one of the two Maitake strains studied, differences compared to placebo were described in the MoCA-J test; not for the second strain. This underscores that results can depend heavily on the specific raw material examined.
