What is Reishi?

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), also known as the glossy ganoderma, is a mushroom with a characteristically shiny surface. In the Chinese-speaking world, it is primarily known as Ling Zhi or Lingzhi.

Unlike classic edible mushrooms, Reishi has a firm, woody consistency and is therefore not typically used as a common culinary mushroom.

The Reishi mushroom owes its German name, "Glänzender Lackporling" (glossy varnished bracket), to its characteristic surface: the fruiting body often features a striking sheen that can look as if it has been varnished.

In nature, Reishi grows on wood, particularly on deciduous trees and their roots or stumps. Today, the mushroom is also specifically cultivated for the production of medicinal mushroom products.
