What is Coprinus?

Coprinus comatus is primarily known in German by the names "Schopf-Tintling" (shaggy mane) and "Spargelpilz" (asparagus mushroom). The young mushroom has an elongated, light-colored cap with characteristic scales.

A distinctive feature becomes apparent as it matures: the fruiting body begins to dissolve, forming a dark liquid – which is also the origin of the name "Tintling" (ink cap).

From ink substitute to medicinal mushroom

Coprinus owes its name, ink cap, to a special characteristic: as it matures, the gills and parts of the fruit body dissolve into a dark liquid.
This was actually used as a substitute for ink in the past.

When young, the Coprinus is also known as an edible mushroom. Due to its mild flavor, it is also called the asparagus mushroom.

A special mushroom with a long history

Coprinus comatus is known as a culinary mushroom, the shaggy mane or lawyer's wig, and is particularly notable for its unusual transformation during maturation.

Coprinus in the kitchen
