What is Polyporus?

Polyporus umbellatus, also known as the umbrella polypore or Zhu Ling, is a mushroom with an unusual growth habit. Its numerous small caps form branched, tufted fruiting bodies.

A special feature lies underground: Polyporus forms a so-called sclerotium – a compact structure that grows in the soil or in the area of tree roots.

Hidden in the ground, known for centuries

Characteristic of Polyporus is its subterranean sclerotium. This is a compact fungal structure from which, under suitable conditions, the above-ground fruiting bodies can develop.

Known as Zhu Ling, Polyporus looks back on a long history of use in Chinese culture. Today, the mushroom is also specifically cultivated and processed into various product forms.
